When an interior designer refers to texture, they are referring to the surface quality of a material. Every surface has a texture, whether smooth or rough, irregular or flat. Our perception of texture is also influenced by the textures of adjacent surfaces, our viewing distance, and the lighting applied. For example, rough surfaces appear more textured than smooth surfaces when viewed up close and when they are covered in light (that is, texture is where the visual sense meets touch), which explains why it is such a key element in interior design.
Along with color and pattern, texture adds interest and substance to a design scheme. Texture can enhance, deepen, enhance and even surprise us and can help create distinctive and unique spaces. To create visually appealing spaces, interior designers apply several design elements: line and shape, color, texture (26%), pattern, proportion and light. Texture in interior design is vital and is literally part of the designer's vocabulary and practice.
